Cowboy R and the Crown Tourney

So, [info]raventhourne had commented she might be able to make my birthday celebration, because she and her husband were going to be in Flagstaff, anyway. As it happens, they didn't, but it started me thinking about why they'd be in Flagstaff, and a little reseach on the web turned up the fact that this weekend is the Kingdom of Atenveldt's crown tourney, where they practice the worst possible way to choose leaders, trial by combat.

A little further explanation seems to be in order, here. A lifetime ago, I was a participating member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, also known as the SCA. I was sort of on the fringes of a great ego war, and thought, "You know, these really aren't the sort of people I want to hang out with," and I dropped out.

Well, in recent years, [info]snotblossom, [info]dorinda2212, [info]raventhourne, [info]forsair, and others have been leading me to reconsider my opinions about the SCA, or at least to visit the current SCA and form opinions on that, rather than things that happened a lifetime ago. So, when I realized that [info]raventhourne was going to be out at this event today, which would give me someone I knew to hang out with, I decided to put on my ancient kilt and poet shirt, strap my dirk to my belt, and head on out there. I mean, what the heck, right? Worst case scenario, I'd say hello to [info]raventhourne, realize it wasn't my scene, and head out.

As it happens, however, what occured was that I had a good time. [info]raventhourne greeted me with a smile and a hug (which isn't a greeting I'm used to, so woo!) and her husband greeted me graciously, and the two of them let me hang out with them all day, were friendly and let me ask lots of stupid questions. For which, by the bye, I am deeply greatful.

[info]raventhourne's husband and I had met before, but hadn't really spent much time together. Today, I had the pleasure and privilege of spending time with him, and realized that he was the sort of person who would fit in well with Sir Nigel and the White Company. He spoke very well of his opponents, both before and after his bouts, he never talked badly about anyone that I heard, and he was cheerful and friendly to a strange guy his wife dragged into their company. As much as anything else, his gracious behavior today has led me to think that I really ought to get involved in the SCA again.

At the end of the day, [info]raventhourne introduced me to the baron of the group up here, Ered Sul, and he and I talked a little bit about things that are going on in the Northlands. And... I think I'm going to go to some of them, and try it out.

One of the things I'm constantly complaining about is my social isolation, here in Flagstaff. And being involved in the SCA will give me people to hang out with, with whom I have at least one thing in common. And I can't help but think that's a good thing.

So...

I just went and bought a membership from the SCA website. If you're a SCAtian, you may now know me as Bjorn the Navigator.

I'm sorry I didn't call you back today. My phone spent the day in the bathroom and the new one doesn't have the annoying beep to let me know I missed the call. I'm glad you had a good time today. From everything I've seen and heard, Baron Christopher is a really good guy. If you're up for the travel, Southern Crusades is coming up and you're always welcome in my camp.

No worries... as you can see, I managed to figure it out. 8)

I had a fantastic time today, and I'm probably (depending on how my sunburn looks in the morning) going back tomorrow for the rapier / archery / etc. And thank you for your kind invitation... I am overwhelmed.

When and where is this Southern Crusades you speak of?

Southern Crusades is November 6-10 in Winkleman, which is kind of between Globe and Tucson. I'm sort of on the autocrat staff for the event, and will generally be found somewhere in the vicinity of the battlefield whenever there's fighting going on. It's not a bad day trip from Tucson, but from points north it's definitely a camping event. There's much more info here http://www.southerncrusades.org

Hmm. That's the weekend after the Tucson Highland games, so... maybe. Particularly if I can find someone to carpool with.

It sounds great! I'm glad to see you find people who may be more your age and into the things you like. I hope your sunburn cooperates and you can have fun tomorrow, too.

Welcome aboard Bjorn!! ;)

I am so very happy for you!! :D
[info]raventhorne and Ivan are great people and have really brought in a bunch of nice folks to the local area. I'm glad you'll have people to talk to in Flagstaff.

Often have thought about getting back in over the years, but unfortunately the price of participation on the level I like to play is far too high.

Bully for you though for jumping in. Though some of my previous experiences were similar to yours, I generally recall having fun at quite a few events.

It's something I've been thinking about a lot, over the last year or so. I had some really bad experiences back in the late 80s, and it really turned me off to the SCA as an organization. (As I think you know; I believe I've related some of those experiences to you previously).

But, over the last couple of years, I've been making more and more friends who are members, and this has slowly worked me around to the point that, after attending and hanging out with [info]raventhorne and Sir Ivan, I was ready to actually make the commitment to at least joining the organization, and investigating at a deeper level. We'll see how that goes.

And I'll readily confess that, having joined, I now find myself with quite a few more things I "should" spend money on, including armor, another "ancient" kilt, a shirt or two, et cetera, et cetera, ad nausium.

I know all about the armor. I was looking at both helms you linked and thinking - "Well, if I traded my chain armor and my old coat of plates then maybe I could afford a suit of legal armor for tourney's. Turns out that I can't, yet. But I was thinking about it when I saw the picture.

Unfortunately, as much as I love Kilts, I find I look like a plaid pumpkin when I wear one. And I dearly love Great Kilts. They are a little pricier than I remember as well . . .

Yeah. If I started Grab, weapon and armor shopping it would get ugly quick. My dear wife kindly pointed out to me that one of the helms was quickly approaching what I spend on either books or RPG's over about an 18 month period. My response was "Do I really buy that many books?"

I think you're being a little bit unkind to yourself with the plaid pumpkin image, though it is an amusing bit of word play. And yes, a kilt is a bit of an investment, though it's also perfectly fine to just grab a length of tartan and belt it on.

Anyway, the expense factor is one of the things that draws me towards Pitbull, because a full set would be less than a grand, even with a few extras tossed in. I could afford that out of next semester's financial aid.

Anyway... yeah. The SCA can be a money sink, if one lets it.

certainly. I was going somewhat for a snort if not a laugh :D

I seem to recall 9 yards of material for a Great Kilt, if one wanted to go that Route - but I may be imagining that I remember such things.

Mmm. Depends on fabric width. If you have single-wide fabric, then yeah, 9 yards... but that's so you can cut it in half, lengthwise, and sew them togteher, side-by-side, to get about 4, 4.5 yards of 50+ inch wide fabric.

If your fabric is double-wide to start, you only need those 4, 4.5 yards.

Though, of course, it also depends how elaborate and deep you want your pleats to be.

Crown Tourney just happens t be one of my favorite events. Well, I actually had a lot of favorites once upon a time, but I doubt I'd recognize the landscape of the SCA anymore.

Glad you had fun and did something social around the time of your birthday.
